Handmade Boxes, Repairs and Restorations
Handmade 2 Row D - G 2 Voice
in Oak, Mahogany and Rosewood
Handmaking the new - repairing the old
Dalriada Melodeons & Accordians was established by
Peter McCune after some years of repairing and restoring
button key boxes. Based on the North East Coast of
County Antrim Northern Ireland he handmakes the Dalriada
Melodeons in a small workshop near Ballycastle producing
high quality instruments.
Dalriada Melodeons - are a compact and lightweight instrument. Tunings can be made to one's
individual tastes. The D - G 2 voice seen here is the box Peter plays and he has gone for an
original wet sound. His B - C and C# - D instruments can have the players preferred tunings.
Peter uses mainly Honhner and Tam reeds. Finished with chrome furnishings and soft padded
leather straps. Matt or gloss finish can be applied to suit different people. Although not much
new mechanisms design can be can be added to many years of melodeon and accordion
design Peter is concentrating more on different timbers and technic of assembly. The Dalriada
has a fast lightweight button action and a flat fingerboard.
The name Dalriada comes for the ancient kingdom of Dalriada, taking in the north coast of
Ireland, the Islands from Rathlin up and along the western coast of Scotland. The front cover
plate design is a map of South Dalriada, in case you are ever asked.
Peter has asked two friends Ciaran Kelly and Terry Bingham, two well-known box players to
play and review the Dalriada box. When available click on the audio-visual reviews.
